Nearly fifty years of corn

If you've ever driven through Markle, Indiana in late July, you've probably seen our stand. Our family has been growing and selling sweet corn here for nearly fifty years — long enough that the kids who once sold you a dozen ears now watch their own kids make change at the same stand.

Then Dave Portnoy happened

In the summer of 2020, Barstool's Dave Portnoy went on a rant about how corn on the cob is criminally underpriced. We're corn people. We couldn't let it slide. So we boxed up some of our corn, wrote him a letter — "our dad has been growing sweet corn for 40 years, and we think this year's corn is the best yet" — and shipped it to Nantucket.

The box sat on his counter for two days before he got to it. He boiled it three minutes, skipped the butter, and gave it a 9.6 — saying he could "eat 14 of these, no joke," and that he'd pay seven dollars for a single ear.

That video changed everything. We built sweetercorn.com while the corn was still in transit, and that first summer we shipped over a thousand dozen ears all over America.

We learned some things the hard way

Truth is, that first year we were better at growing corn than shipping it. Some boxes showed up late and disappointed people, and we refunded every one of them. Six summers later, we've got it down: insulated packaging, ice packs, shipping only Monday through Wednesday so corn never sits in a warehouse over a weekend, and expedited delivery required for the far corners of the country. Your corn is picked, sorted, chilled, and packed the same day it leaves the farm.

Two weeks a year

Great sweet corn doesn't keep a schedule that's convenient for anybody. We pick for about two weeks each July, and then it's over. When it's gone, it's gone — see you at the stand, or see you at your mailbox.
